Bicycles and golf carts are the favored modes of transportation in Point Lookout, NY.

By CAITLIN KELLY

ALTHOUGH some beach communities offer weekend parades of their residents’ late-model luxury cars — often as part of traffic jams — a quiet Long Island enclave, Point Lookout, is dominated by golf carts, a feature that seems odd in a town with no manicured green in sight.

Families of 6, 8 or even 10 aren’t unusual in Point Lookout. Its shady streets are lined with carefully tended gardens, and it remains the sort of place where an elderly man on a bicycle can be overheard telling a friend he’s off to Saturday afternoon Mass.

Point Lookout is a hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The population was 1,472 at the 2000 census.

Although the hamlet of Point Lookout is of recent origin, its name dates back to the early 1700s. This locality was constantly changing in size and appearance as the present Jones Inlet moved westward. This area was occasionally inhabited by fishermen and whalers, and they created the name by which it is now known.
